GENERAL GOALS 

The Shopping Mall is basically an area designed for beginners. There are three major departments, each providing various activities for the beginner including vocabulary and comprehension activities.

 

TYPES OF ACTIVITIES:

This area offers vocabulary, matching and fill-in-the-gap exercises, multiple choice activities, grammar, crossword and games.

In this section you will find a link bank, word bank and a grammar bank related to the activities.


Clothes Department

Objectives of the activities:

The Clothes Department of the Shopping Mall is mainly an area for beginners. Its main objectives are to present the new learner with vocabulary concerning clothing and colours.

However, the department also offers more demanding activities concerning clothes, sizes and fill in the gap exercises.

Tips:

These activities can be used on an individual basis or in groups of two. It may be necessary with some assistance to understand how the activities work, but otherwise they should be easy to understand.

However, the activity, Sizing of clothes and shoes, does require that the user understands that the size chart is necessary to use in order to do the exercise. It is not an advisable activity for total beginners.


Stationery Department

Objectives of the activities:

This department of the Shopping Mall is an area for beginners. It gives the new learner the opportunity to learn new vocabulary and grammar and the more proficient learner the opportunity to test their acquired knowledge of the English language.

The EU Food Store Department

Objectives of the activities:

This department of the Shopping Mall provides activities for beginners. It is divided into seven subcategories.


The Fruit and Vegetable Department

This department gives the user the opportunity to recognise the names of different fruits and vegetables. There are some slightly more advanced activities that more motivated and proficient beginners may enjoy.

The Delicacies Department

This department is for anyone interested in trying recipes from around Europe. They can be used in a cross-curricular program, for instance about food in European countries and can be used as inspiration to read a recipe in English and utilising it.

The department includes activities with the flags of the EU countries, (anno 2001), and an activity about languages spoken in the countries of the EU.

The Dairy Department

This section is divided into Milk, Cheese, Cream, Sour Cream and Yoghurt.

Milk is a section about metric and American weights and volumes requiring mathematical knowledge and understanding in order to do the activities. It is a challenging activity for the proficient beginner and a good activity for intermediate users as well.

Cheese is about cheeses in Europe and their geographical placements in EU. This is an activity for anyone and may be used as inspiration to learn more about regions and countries of the EU.

Cream and Sour Cream are sections with simple activities in vocabulary recognition.

Yoghurt is a section with a simple reading and understanding activity for the more proficient beginner or intermediate user.

This section is for beginners and provides the opportunity to acquire vocabulary concerning animals. The activities are relatively easy and can be used with beginners as well as for intermediate users.

The Herbs and Spice Department

This section provides the names of various herbs and spices in English. It is a relatively simple area for those users who may be interested in learning the names of different herbs and spices. It is geared for beginners, but can be used by anyone. The section also provides a recipe for pesto using some of the herbs mentioned in the activity.
