Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there was a land far, far away in Europe, isolated from the rest of the world. It was a small island in the middle of the Baltic Sea

The people of the island knew nothing of the outside world, since they were surrounded by the sea. They believed, that they lived on the edge of the world, and if they dared to go beyond this point, they would fall off and die.

The people of the island also believed that there were two kinds of people in the world; those who lived above ground and those who lived below. The people who lived underground were people who had magical powers. They would come above ground at night and they would try to tease and bother people living above. The people living above ground were afraid to go out at night because of this. They were afraid the people under ground would kill them, if they ventured out at night.

It was not a good idea to move the rocks and stones that covered the island either. If someone did this, it would disrupt the sleep of the people under ground and they would become very angry and put a curse on the person who did this.
Some people living on the island today still believe this, because the island is a magical place and where there are a number of signs that the people of the underground still exist. They are a kind of troll.

If you go to the island, you will see them everywhere. You will find them in shops and houses, on the ice cream wrappers and even on some of the churches.

People living on the island always have an elderberry tree growing next to their house as well. The reason is to keep the trolls away and to protect the house and its inhabitants. A person who cuts an elderberry tree down is sure to die and the family living there will certainly always be cursed!
